Not sure if this has been clarified, but I thought I would offer my two cents on it.
I recall there being some question as to whether the 1958 Aaron card with the blue back was sun bleached or just colored weakly. I just picked up a card which may clarify this... If you notice, there is a green area on the background which has some yellow color. It helps that the yellow is slightly out of register also. One can see that the yellow plate was placed partially on the image. Because there is a partial yellow overlay on the background and the rest is left intentionally blank, it appears there is or should be a blue background variation which is accepted in the hobby. This shows that the blue background card was created by not having a yellow overlay. That the blue background is not a result of sun fade. Therefore, the missing yellow plate ought to be a variation, not a poorly kept card. AARON.jpg

The fade of that yellow is telling me this is an altered card. There are several members of the board that have duplicated the blue backs to show they are a product of altering. Your example likely had something over the spot in question that kept the fade to a minimum.
This is an example of Ben's that he altered to protect the yellow and show it can be done. Again, this is admittedly altered. If you want more info on these, I suggest IMing Ben North.

Usually these cards have a small rectangle of the original color on them where the price tag kept that small area from being severely faded from the sunlight while being in a glass showcase at a card store. I'm guessing that this one had a round price sticker in the area on the left side where it has the original unfaded color.

Every Aaron card pictured in this thread is faded. I know 100% mine is.
![]() Missing color are among my favorite cards so I have done a ton of testing/experimenting so I know what is real and what is not. |
