I'll start this show and tell by posting two of my favorites......

This one I heard after watching (on TV) this tremendous game on Oct 8th 1956.




Don Larsen's modest response to the sports media's numerous questions after his Perfect No-Hitter......

" The Dodgers made it easy for me....I threw only 97 pitches. "


and,

Scenario......1958 World Series: Milwaukee 3 vs Yankees 1

The following day a pushy sports reporter asks Casey Stengel:
" If he thought the Yankees were choked up ? "

Casey responded:
" If there is any choking, it will be you on this microphone. "

This obnoxious reporter was Howard Cosell.

The Yankees won the next 3 games to win the Series. Bob Turley achieved an unprecedented "trifecta" by shutting out the Braves in Game 5.
Beating them in relief in Game 6. And, winning Game 7.

Can we expand this to other sports? Couldn't pass up this classic:

ABA and NBA player Marvin "Bad News" Barnes apparently didn't get the concept of time zones, maybe thinking they were a variation of the 2-3 or matchup zone. When told that his team flight would depart Louisville, KY at 9:00 A.M. (EST) and arrive in St. Louis, MO at 8:59 A.M. (CST) Barnes told team radio guy Bob Costas: "I don't know about you, but I ain't gettin' in no time machine."

I heard Tony Gwynn tell the story that when Rickey Henderson had recently joined the Padres, he walked onto the team bus and looked around for a seat. He says to anyone that can hear, "Where's Rickey going to sit?" Steve Finley responds to Rickey, "Rickey, you can sit anywhere you want...you have tenure." In vintage Rickey fashion, he replies, "Tenure, man, Rickey got 15 year"

To hear Tony Gwynn tell it was great since he could barely get through the story without cracking up. I was never a huge Henderson fan until I heard his HOF speech and came to realize how much he absolutely loved the game of baseball. What a great character!

Maybe I'll have to listen to that as Henderson is up there with Bonds on the hatred level but if Tony said he was ok then perhaps I've misjudged .................a little.........

In the minors in 1888, one of the opposing players was talking trash to Larry Corcoran while he was at the plate and he called the player a "field ornament", while also noting how bad he was defensively. I've used that line while talking about a player that has no defensive value

On the infamous side, I'll go with Jarrod Weaver's recent dumb retort to Kyle Seager. Perhaps the fact that he doesn't "...even know who the kid is" is why he is 7-11 with a 4.7 ERA. Maybe if he researched the batters he'll be facing he could get that ERA down a little. It's also funny to hear a 32 year old calling a 27 year old a "kid". They are both kids.

On the vintage side, I love to listen to anything Sam Crawford said about Ty Cobb in "Glory of Their Times".

I've never heard of this quote being about Oscar Charleston, but usually in reference to Cool Papa Bell. Also used by Muhammed Ali, obviously a great line appropriated by many nonetheless.....
