HI im trying to figure out how the 1937 and 1936 Goudey Wide Pens are distinguished. Ive seen them listed in various places as different sets and then the same set. Ive also seen folks claim the complete set while missing notable 1937 players like Doerr etc. Is there a definitive checklist for 1936-37 or two separate checklists? Any info anyone can provide on this would be helpful - id like to focus on 1937 but im not sure i can evaluate what that set actually comprises. Thanks in advance!
PS - Always looking for rare Ted Williams and Bobby Doerr cards! 1939 Goudey Premiums Ted is at the very top of my list! |

There are actually four or five separate Goudey Wide Pen sets from 1936 and 1937. They were all listed separately in the Standard Catalog last time I checked. The 1937 set is sometimes called the "creamy" set because it has a distinct creamy tone to the cards. This is the set that includes Feller and Doerr. I know there are experts out there on this group of sets. Hopefully, one of them will chime in with more information.

Ah thanks! I was looking in a few other guides and the PSA set registry but the Standard lists all 5 types. So just to close the loop and post my findings - the Doerr is in the Type 4 set which is one of two (Type 4 and Type 5) that are under the unofficial "creamy" designation. ! The PSA holds them all in one big super set here:
http://www.psacard.com/psasetregistr...ite.aspx?c=569 But those are in fact 5 different sets types from 1936 and 1937. Thank so much for pointing me in the right direction! |

..I just tried this and it will somewhat solve ninety-five percent of your dilemma : on E-Bay search , enter " R314 type "------use the ''Completed'' rather than the '' Sold ''; you'll get 'way more results..all five types are currently represented...I'm 99% complete on these so if there is a particular player or type you'd like to see , I'd be glad to help. Interesting but very frustrating set . The R313 is a cakewalk in comparison. |

As Larry stated, the Goudey Premium is much rarer than the Play Ball rookie card but is a premium and not a card so won't carry rookie card status. That will always keep it behind the Play Ball in terms of desirability (if not price) in my opinion.
BTW the Doerr and Feller are both '37's and rookies, although not technically cards, so they don't command the rookie card designation. Since these premiums are about the size of standard postcards, a very convincing argument could be made for considering them as cards and thus eligible for rookie card status. Phil - Is the 1941 Double Play considered Feller's Rookie Card? I have both the '37 and the Double Play, but just sold my '48 Bowman...of course, there is always the Leaf issue too...so, which is the real RC?
