50's Dodgers auto's- Opinions?

No takers? I like them. Just a cursory glance, but I didn't see any that jumped out at me as bad.

Well here's the thing, I thought they looked ok too, for the most part. But I did a psa quick opinion on it and it came back as likely not genuine.

Not mine, but the PSA opinion surprises me a little.

This is a toughie.. I like the fact that the signatures are penned in different colors, and to be honest I liked the biggies at first glance...

After looking a little closer the Jackie and campy draw strong resemblances to those found on dodger clubhouse balls... The other interesting piece is that Jackie is above campy(in different ink-pen switch?)as was the case on clubby signed balls (Jackie, campy, erskine)...

I'm not too comfortable with this one...

I'm with Dave. Plus, the Robinson looks like a very early Robinson - not 1952.

That's a good point, Scott. I knew something about the Robinson bothered me, but I failed to recognize the fact that his signature had changed from his earlier sigs by 1952.

When you do a quick opinion on a multi signed item like this, will the deem it as not likely genuine if any of the auto's are bad/clubhouse? In other words, one bad auto will ruin the opinion all together?

I know someone on another forum contacted PSA and said they told them that they dismiss the entire piece if one autograph is bad.

Interesting - so you can have 'secretarial' signatures on baseballs, but not on flat pieces?

I don't think that's what he means Scott. I think what Mike is saying PSA said if most autos are real but one is bad, they will say it's likely not genuine even only one auto might be bad.

Nate, ironically this was the item I was interested in purchasing when I told you I was selling some items to raise funds. I decided against chasing it yesterday. I like it but after reading comments here I'm glad I didn't take that $1000 gamble. This is why I generally shy away from autographs.

Now that I see the actual item...I like it a lot. The Robinson might be a clubhouse sig, I am not sure, but for the most part I think they are all real. I also like the provenance that comes with it.

Oh good, well hopefully my post helped you then instead of pushing you away from it.

I was interested in going pretty hard on it, but didn't feel comfortable with it. And like you, I don't do many auto's anymore either.

That being said, if you find something else and still need to sell that item, please let me know. :-)

I think that this piece is an example of the whole is better than the parts. Because of the provenance of the wire photo, I think that almost 1k is a decent price. Even if the possibility of a clubhouse signature or 2 exists, it is just a great 1 of a kind item (imo).

Jeff, I totally agree with you. I thought $1000 was a great price for such a cool item. I thought it would actually go for more. It's unique and has great crossover appeal as well.

Nonetheless, being a novice when it comes to autographs I didn't feel secure or well educated enough to pull the trigger myself. Nor are my pockets deep enough to take chances. I have a little over 100 autographs in my small collection. I would say that 95% have been picked up in person. For this guppy the piece in question represented a leap into the deep end of the ocean.

I fully agree. By definition I am not an autograph guy. After almost 30 years of collecting and selling sports memorabilia, I usually go with my gut on autographs. I also usually don't reach or spend too much on autograph items. My criteria on something like this is "would I be happy looking at it on my own wall". I definitely would have been happy owning this particular piece.

I have several of Barney Stein's pics so I'll be happy hanging it on my wall even if there are a couple clubhouse sigs. That being said, you guys discussing it got me interested in learning more. Is there a good autograph reference guide out there showing examples and things to look for?

I've had a chance to look over this and my skeptical side thinks many of them could be clubhouse signatures, but I have no autograph expertise whatsoever. That's just from comparing them to other authenticated items I found on the internet, signed checks, etc. I'd love to hear opinions of advanced autograph collectors. The fact that multiple pens were used seems odd to me if they're all clubhouse, but definitely possible. Still a unique item, but there are question marks...
