Packs, I liked that item a lot, but couldn't pull the trigger. Hope Williams experts will chime in with their opinions as to when it was signed (more recent than '40s?)

Been looking for a signed Ted Williams card for a little while, and picked this one up tonight off eBay.
1939-1946 Salutation Exhibits Ted Williams signed.jpg ADDING- I guess if anyone has opinions on the above sig, the same question would apply for mine... there was no claim as to when it was signed, but would love if it were on the older side. I added an Everett Scott signed baseball. The "Deacon" played 12 seasons from 1914-26 and served as captain of both the fabled New York Yankees, as well as the Boston Red Sox. He is a member of the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame and played on 3 Red Sox World Series championship teams. He was also on the Yankees 1923 World Series winning team. Scott held the record for most consecutive games played until his steak was bested by the Iron Horse in 1933.
. ![]() And on another panel, is some guy known as a singles hitter with a reputation for having a general surly attitude. I think his nickname is derived from a fruit or something like that. ![]() |

Look in this article. Pretty sure that's the one you just bought. I'd ask the experts on this board what they think. But if you're happy good for you, but thought it would be nice to tell you what others think.

Scott... did those words really just come from your mouth?? haha
![]() I must admit though.. I thought the same thing as Brock. I have no idea, however, if the auto is good or bad. Sweet item if good. HOS says it is "suspect" with no reasons why?? Sounds about right..

A friend got these for me at an Australian Boxing HOF function. I am especially pleased to add the Nigel Benn to my collection. The Dark Destroyer does not sign cards anymore except under special circumstances because he doesn't like the resale aspect.

Hey guys - couldn't resist this vintage Dimaggio ball. It's light but I just really liked it. I'm just starting to get into autographs but I don't think I see vintage DiMaggio balls too often. Is that true autograph guys? any thoughts would be appreciated.
And I didn't really go for the Ott Goudey back in August at Huggins but was lucky enough to find this one with a JSA. Hope you like..... peter Last edited by WillowGrove; 11-21-2013 at 09:17 PM. |

Got this one back today... fortunately/unfortunately it is going to a good friend...
The signature was acquired at a recent Joe Torre charity event... I told the gent who got it for me that I was a fan of index cards, he ended up getting it on a piece of Canvas board, so this thing is a monster... Paired it with a ticket to the game in which Jorge hit the last hr of his career #275 and a photo of him taking a curtain call after hitting it... My buddy is going to be real happy when he gets it! |

In the same auction they had an item from the Mickey Mantle estate that they listed as a bat that was signed by "11 Hall of Famers". You would think they would mention that it was a 500 home run club bat.
Unfortunately another bidder recognized the same thing I did and outbid me. Tom C |

It seems highly unlikely that Mears could overlook something like that that. Wouldn't the Consignor say something when he/she saw the Lot and its description posted on-line? Hard to believe the Consignor would approve of this... unless it was someone who is completely naive, or inherited the book (knowing absolutely nothing about memorabilia or collecting). The autographs are not incredibly clear. They are pencil on a darker background. The Hornsby that you can see, I assume that it is so clear due to the flash reflecting off of the graphite. The auction house was under the impression that someone had written the names of the photographed players under the photo. They have no doubt that the "markings" are real and not facsimile. They just seemed to have thought that they were just written by someone who was identifying the photos. However, there is no question that these are autographs of the individuals. The two clearest that I have seen from the listing are the Hornsby and the Grimm, and both are 100% the real deal. Add that to the fact that the auction house says that the "markings" are in pencil (not facsimile) and you have your answer.
At least I hope you do! Tom C |
