Well, not quite pre-war, but close - and it's my first ever REA win. An upgrade for my set. Happy with the price.

Played it perfectly. Fell asleep on the couch, woke about 2:20 CST, put in my last bid and got it for that....

Unfortunately, sat this one out as all items that I was interested in were already at or beyond my max bids by the time extended bidding began. At least I got a good night's sleep............

I picked up the pair of Brooklyn Dodgers signed baseballs... no particular reason but I thought the price was decent and I liked the panel with Hodges/Furrillo/Pitler on one. I'm jealous of whoever picked up the 1912 WS Red Sox Medallion and the other lot with 17 1912 Red Sox photos... they are lucky that I am not a rich man.

I was able to pick up one of my "white whale" cards that I have been looking for for nearly a decade but have never had the opportunity to purchase one (I always hoped it wouldn't get any much publicity until I was able to pick one up). I was willing to go MUCH higher but it was pretty well hidden in a larger lot so I am really happy.
He has almost always been simply listed as "Graham" or even "Peaches Graham" in most checklists but this card is in fact the only known individual card of "Field of Dreams" subject ARCHIBALD "MOONLIGHT" GRAHAM (who was played by Burt Lancaster). ![]()

in the Moses household as I woke up fulling expecting to be outbid on the Old Judge banner. With juice it hammered at least 1000. less than I expected. Despite my reluctance to do so based on so many discussions here and in the free market - I had to sleep and executed a "left" bid only 2 bids above my final winning bid. I "won" it at my initial amount. It is elegent and refined as well as rare and historically significant - at least to me. Yeah!!!

Greg, that was a great deal. I'm moving, so couldn't justify bidding on an item that large, but I was pleased with this:

My two pickups from last night's auction. I previously had a '33 Delong Gehrig that I had to part with in order to fund a trip to Easter Island. Hasn't been an easy replacement. The Jackie replaces one I sold to Greg Schwartz years ago (Ok, 5 or 6), and I have been kicking myself for selling it ever since. The market for Jackie's rookie has obviously changed since then.

Yes, Robinson rookie cards have seemingly shot up in price overnight -- but how about the fact that the SGC 60 went for as much as the SGC 84? And the 84 is a nice 84.

I got this 1933 Yankees ball signed by Ruth and Gehrig (and others). It's pretty light but it worked for my price range, so I'll be quite happy with it!

I think the SGC 60 kind of falls into the same category as the 38 Goudeys...
Robinson cards have definitely shot up in the past 7-9 months.

Yes, a wildly off-centered PSA 7 went in a PWCC auction in June for twice what the card had been going for. Now a 2K card is regularly a 4K card. And even a nice SGC 60 goes for 4K! Thanks, Brent!

Yeah, it's crazy. I was first extremely panicked when I saw the price of the SGC60 thinking perhaps I screwed up and bid on the wrong Robinson. Seems pretty odd how it sells for the same as the one I picked up.

Maybe the bidders for the SGC60 didn't put a placeholder bid for the 84 for whatever reason (perhaps thought it'd go for a lot higher), so just ended up getting in a bidding war on this one.

Picked these two up, way outside of my usual hobby realm (autographs) as I don't typically buy cards that aren't signed or that I don't intend to get signed, but I thought they were neat:
1889 Buck Ewing N29 Relatively good eye appeal for it's technical condition grade of PSA 2. Supposedly has paper loss on the back from the bottom of the card up about halfway. Must be in the white area. Presents really nice in scans. ![]() ![]() Next up, is a neat item of a Texas Legend, Nolan Ryan. I saw one of these a couple of years ago being offered by the Topps Vault auction at the 2011 National. I don't know if this is the same one that sold there or not, as I'm not sure how common or scarce these are, but decided to snap it up. Here's the description from REA. Offered is a fascinating and particularly unusual color-process proof sheet from the 1968 Topps set consisting of forty-four cards, including the key rookie card of Nolan Ryan and Hall of Famers Hank Aaron, Joe Morgan, Tony Perez, and Carl Yastrzemski. Printed on a thick paper stock (similar to vinyl), the sheet is arranged in four rows of eleven cards with large margins on top and bottom, the latter of which includes black, blue, magenta, and yellow color spectrum lines. Crop marks are also visible in all four margins. All but one of the cards appear as they would in final production when viewed from the front; the Yastrzemski checklist, however, is missing all of the black text which would normally appear in the checklist portion of the card, suggesting that the offered sheet may have been one press run short of a final production version. The back of the sheet is blank. These sheets were used by the printer for the purpose of checking colors, registration, and generally proofing the cards before final production began. Bright and clean, both front and back, with a small, almost imperceptible, tear along the bottom edge and a chip out of the upper right corner, neither of which detracts from the overall presentation. The Nolan Ryan rookie card, which is situated in the lower left corner of the sheet, displays exceptionally well and is an ideal highlight. This sheet would make an outstanding companion piece to any 1968 Topps set or serve as an extraordinary addition to any uncut sheet or Nolan Ryan collection. Dimensions: 21 x 28 inches. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
