(NOTE: I've been doing this as a running thread for several different photos, so go to the end for the latest mystery man, and thanks in advance for any/all help!)
In dealing with lots of photos, it is almost inevitable that I will run across one every now and then that is not identified and I don't recognize. So I'm starting this thread to help thin out my "unidentified" pile. I won't add a new photo until the previous one has been identified or stalled significantly to try and keep it fun and challenging for anyone who cares to chip in. Any help or solid leads will be appreciated. So first up, who's this guy? The photo has no identifying markings and does appear to be vintage, possibly of the period. It's a crisp image, which makes the tear across the middle all the more unfortunate. ![]() Last edited by thecatspajamas; 06-22-2013 at 09:32 PM. |

Wow, that was fast! I couldn't find another clear shot of Felsch from a quite that same angle, but the facial features do appear similar to me. So this would be him circa 1915-16 then.
So if there are no dissenters, I will consider this one "case closed" and move on to the next. Thanks for the quick response, Don! ![]() Last edited by thecatspajamas; 11-24-2012 at 06:25 PM. |

Lance - I'm not so sure it's settled. If you can post or send me a higher resolution scan his head we may be able to settle this one way or the other.

One thing we can clearly see is that the belt buckle in Lance's photo is at a different location compared to the belt buckle in the Felsch photos shown above (and all the others I could find tonight).

Right shoe on original photo has a tongue with a white label/tab. Felsch photo above has no tab.

I was about to add the next unknown to this thread, and realized I had never responded to Mark's request for a larger head shot (sorry!)
So after much delay: |

So, the fleshy part of Felsch's earlobe (photo below right) runs much farther up towards the back edge of his ear the does that of the player in Lance's photo (below left), so we can be sure he is not Felsch. Still don't know who he is.

Still no resolution on the "not-Felsch" photo, but ran across another this evening, so moving on. Any ideas on this one? Not nearly as clear, unfortunately. Acme stamping on the back dates to the 1930's fwiw, but the caption is unfortunately missing.

Any ideas on the Red Sox player with the strained expression on his face? (Bonus points and extra kudos if you recognize the Yankee looking away from the camera).

Could be. Just adding a closer crop for larger detail to see if that helps:

I think Stuart but also a slight resemblance to Don Demeter.

The more I look at it, the more I'm sure it is Stuart, with the way the vertical creases run on his face.

Maybe, just maybe (per retrosheet):
August 29, 1964: Yankees beat Red Sox 10-2. Yanks score 4 in first and no more until 6th--Sox blanked until 7th (fits with scoreboard). Dick Stuart leads off top of 5th with double to left, described as deep 3B. This could have been a bloop double with a play at 2B. Second baseman for the Yanks that day--Pedro Gonzalez.

I doubt if the Yankee infielder is Lopez. He played only one game at infield in both 1963 and 1964, the years Stuart was with Boston. I will go with Pedro Gonzalez.

Okay, definitely going with Stuart on that one, with a "strong possibility" to Pedro Gonzalez. Special thanks to nolemmings and his boredom for a very plausible scenario to match the image. Thanks guys!

Next up is this gentleman in almost-profile. He's in a Cubs uniform, no earlier than 1929, possibly as late as 1931. This one is from a photograph taken by George Burke which has his player/team ID coding, but not the player's name. I've got his player codes from a great many photos, and many more yet to record on the spreadsheet, but don't have a match to this one. So all that is to say I may be able to confirm or deny some guesses if I know the player code for your guess to be something else (if none of that last bit makes sense, just tell me who you think it looks like, and we'll go from there).
Taking one last look at it before posting, it looks like Rogers Hornsby to me, but would like to at least second that before I go with it (Hornsby, of course, is one that I don't have the player code for. If anyone has a Burke photo of Hornsby and can confirm the typed code on the back, that would be helpful as well). Add: Scratch Hornsby from the list. I found his player code (361) on several negatives offered by Legendary, consistent over several years / teams. Code on this one is N3 (team code = National League Cubs) 584 (player code). Bingo! Petty is another player that I did not have his Burke code on record, but another source was able to confirm that Burke assigned him #584 which matches the negative I have. Thank you for the point in the right direction!

Any ideas on this Cubs player? Found him on an unlabeled glass plate negative, and I can't seem to recall where I picked it up (no guarantee it would help even if I could though).

Still not 100% sure on Glossop. In most of the photos I have, his nose appears a bit more rounded, but there is a LOT of sunlight that looks to be washing out some of the details of the negative, so I wouldn't rule him out. Emil Verban was also suggested, but I think failed the "ear check" due to Verban's earlobes being fully-attached whereas this guy's are at least somewhat detached.
By no means am I an expert on these things though (hence this thread), so feel free to set me straight. |

Thanks Scott. After looking at many many head shots, the closest I've been able to come is Bob Usher, but he doesn't quite look right either. At this point, my brain seems to be telling me every second or third Cub I look at is an obvious match, I think because it is tired and wants me to stop looking at photos
![]() Mark, to answer your question about the first photo, no, I never was able to come up with a positive ID on that one, so back in the "unidentified" pile he went until that "aha" moment finally strikes. Last edited by thecatspajamas; 06-22-2013 at 09:05 PM. |

Okay, here's another one of those "why won't they just look at the camera" shots, as if I didn't have enough problems with unidentified photos. I think the guy on the left is Charlie Neal of the 1962-63 Mets, but I'm always open to complete failure/embarrassment on these things. No info on the back that would provide any help with either the date or ID's. Any helpful insight would be appreciated.
