SOLD: 1928 Yankees Team signed ball w/ Gehrig

OK, I bought this a few months ago from David, and have decided to switch to a different focus. I am going to cut and paste from his eBay auction, but I assure you it is as I received it and the pic I am including is only the panel that has Gehrig + others on it. OK--we all know that the most coveted team-signed baseball is a 1927 Yankees ball, and this one is a 1928. But the '28 squad was almost identical to the fabled 1927 team--in fact, most of the signatures on this ball are those of 1927 Yankees, including three of the rarest and most sought-after 1927 Yankee signatures.

This mildly-toned red-and-blue stitched Official American League (Ban Johnson) baseball, bears 24 signatures of the World Champion 1928 New York Yankees, including

Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, Urban Shocker, John Grabowski, Herb Pennock, Ben Paschal, Pat Collins, Earle Combs, Waite Hoyt, Myles Thomas, Wilcy Moore, Bennie Bengough, Cedric Durst, Bob Meusel, Mark Koenig, George Pipgras, Arthur Fletcher, Bill Dickey, Leo Durocher, and Stan Coveleski. Unfortunately, the Babe Ruth signature is a clubhouse version.

Three of the above are extremely rare signatures--Shocker, Grabowski, and Thomas.

Pitcher Urban Shocker--considered by many a Hall of Fame candidate--left the team during the 1928 season due to ill-health, and died later that year. Catcher John Grabowski was killed in a house fire in Albany, New York in 1946. Pitcher Myles Thomas died in 1963, long before collecting 1927 Yankee autographs became popular. In addition, second baseman Tony Lazzeri died in 1946, and catcher pat Collins died in 1960. Due to their premature deaths, all are extremely difficult signatures to obtain.

The mildly toned, red-and-blue stitched OAL Barnard baseball is in excellent condition. The "Official American League Ball" and manufacturer's stampings are strong. The signatures range in strength from an "8" to a "2", and almost all are quite legible. The Gehrig is a solid "5", and is a lovely example of his 1920s style signature.

The ball has been authenticated by James Spence Authentication, one of the most knowledgeable and trustworthy professional sports autograph authenticators. Their CoA is included.
