Does anyone have any theories on how many examples exist of these cards roughly. I know there are a few that were short printed etc but I was just wondering if anyone knew the ballpark figures of what is out there on this set. Thanks

I don't think anyone can give an accurate number only guesses. I have had several GM's sets and singles over the years. They have always been one of my favorite post war sets. I heard or read somewhere that there were an estimated 20,000 of each card printed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. So if there are around 650 cards in each set that would put total production around 13 million each year. The GM set was a "test issue" per say, but there are many more GM than many other so called test issues. I would guess there is probably around 5% or less of the GM compared to the regular issue Topps. My guess would be around 55,000 total GM cards. With the double prints accounting for at least 75% of the total GM production. I have put several sets together, I feel there are some SPs that seem to be much tougher to find than some of the other SPs, such as, Howard, Killebrew and Wilhelm to name a few.
My guess 55,000 total GM 40,000 Double Prints.. 22 different cards.. 1820 of each card. 15,000 Single Prints.. 33 different cards.. 455 of each card. |

Chris, Do you know if there was a wrapper produced for these cards? I've heard that a wrapper exists, but I have never seen one. The Wrapper Guy

I have a set. I have never seen an unopened pack or wrapper. I have heard that they were sold by packs only in Brooklyn on a limited basis as a test. I have also heard that examples can be found with gum stains. And, I have seen a scan of a beat up wax box. I think the entire set was also available through the Card Collectors Company of NY.
And why didn't the set include Aaron and Clemente ? ![]() Last edited by ALR-bishop; 07-07-2012 at 08:27 AM. |

I don't think there are any Pirates in the set, maybe they were scheduled to be in a second series??

I've read that many GM cards were lost in a Card Collector's Co. warehouse fire.
I've also read that the GM cards were only sold in and around NYC. Yet, I distinctly recall these cards available in a candy store in the western suburbs of Chicago, the summer of '71. I remember seeing a few in the shoebox of a fellow child collector. And I highly doubt they were bought through a mail order supplier, as all in my circle were casual collectors. Is it possible the GM's made there way into the Chicago market or is my mind playing tricks on me? |
