Traveling to Kansas City

In the middle of July I will be traveling from Central Kentucky to Kansas City, Missouri. I have never had the priveledge of traveling out west, but am pretty excited for the opportunity.

Being a negro league fan I will definitely be visiting the Negro League Baseball Museum. However, I was wondering if anyone else has traveled this way or lives anywhere between KY and Kansas City and has any other tips of things to do including:

-Baseball Museums
-Baseball Card Shops
-Antique Shops
-Flea Markets
-Good Restaurants

I live out by KC. Give me a shout at 816-294-9847 and I can point you to the best BBQ in the midwest. What part of KY you from? Went to Campbellsville U. 1 year.

Hi, I live about an hour from KC. Pickers Antique Mall is about 10 miles North of KC and is pretty good. Strouds is a great place to eat, it is family style and has great pan fried chicken and pork chops. Sometimes you have to wait 30 minutes to an hour to get in. I dont know of any good card shops. The World War I museum is also in KC. The All Star game is in KC July 10 also.

Well goodness gracious... it says Nicholasville right there, that's Jessamine County, south of Lexington / Fayette County, and a bit north of Campbellsville and Taylor County. From Campellsville you'd go north to Lebanon, then norhteast to Harrodsburg, and continue northeast to Nicholasville... golly, Jason, you musta had too much brown wine (bourbon for your fereners) and not learned your way around the hollars and hills...

I"m headed there for the All Star game. Any tips and suggestions would be appreciated, St. Louis as well.

No good card shops unless you go into Kansas in Olathe. One shop hit or miss with prewar. Abuelos is one of the best authentic mexican restaurants around. Its north of the city about 15-20 in the Zona Rosa complex. I would hit the Plaza and power and light district. There is some nice antique shops by the farmers market. One is about 3 stories and huge and every time I am in there I found non sports tobacco and tobacco tins and pouches. Someone else mentioned Pickers. Another good shop in Platte City up north. Picked up my best pouches and tins there but take cash!!! Have fun. I miss living there immensely.

I second Abuelos. My parents live next door to Zona Rosa and I try to hit it a couple times a year. I can tell you where all the good card shops are in KC back in the 90's . They are unfortunately all gone and not much left. I left KC in 92 but I am back visiting all the time with my entire immediate family in KC.

If you want steak, try Jess and Jim's in Martin City, MO. Its a little south of town but it is the best steak place I have ever been to.

Yes my year at Campbellsville was interesting. Beautiful country, great people and I saw Tim Couch play at Taylor County high school for the opposing team. Only high school game I went to while I was there. A couple of teammates and I had to go to the school earlier in the week and talk about college, athletics etc. and we were invited back to the game. Also saw shot some hoops with Travis Ford in the gym one day after practice. I didnt know who he was until my roommate told me. They bleed UK blue down there. My old roomie is now a coach/teacher in Elizabethtown KY. They had beautiful girls, nice people, and a rela nice part of the country. L'Ville and Lexington were both relatively close and fun to visit.

Back to KC. Why you are there go to Oklahoma Joe's BBQ on Mission Road. Anthony Bourdain has been a few times and it is on his list of 10 places to eat in the world before you die. Best BBQ hands down in KC.

I live just south of KC and would recommend the following:

Museums: Negro Leagues Museum at 27th and Brooklyn. Very close to where old Municipal Stadium was located (A's). Also, Nelson-Atkins for art in general, and the Kemper Museum for modern art.

Baseball Card shops: Almost non-existant.

Antique shops: Brass Armadillo on I70 in Blue Springs; Waldo Antique Mall, 75th and Wornall( a little junky, but an occasional find). There are also two or three antique stores/flea markets just east of Columbia on I70 you may want to check out on your way in. River Market Antiques in the River Market area just off the I 35 north loop in Kansas City.

Other interesting areas: Crown Center, Union Station and the Plaza

Food: Jack's Stack 90th(?) and Metcalf on the Kansas side. Any number of great restaurants on the Plaza.

Jack Stack is @ 95th and Metcalf, across from Metcalf North (mall) next to Red Robin. There is also one on State Line Rd. close to Jess and Jim's (Martin City). Oklahoma Joe's (135th and Strang Line - Olathe), I prefer to Jack Stacks.
