I think that card is a P.O.S.........I think the hype and gimmick of goofy cards like this are why youngsters have drifted away from our hobby.
Another thing....why does that card looked creased and smooshed corners? Was it made to look "Old"? I hope it wasn't a nice bat that was destroyed to make this card. However tpg would probably give it a 7 or 8 ![]() |

I posted a comment that I doubt will get through the moderator. This kind of stuff appalls me! Should we chop up the Mona Lisa? How about chopping T206 Wagners into 100 pieces?

I could not agree more, Jim. Destroying these great pieces of sports history is disgraceful and almost criminal. I like the Mona Lisa analogy. Who would think that that would be a good thing? How about the Declaration of Independence? There are lots of good signatures there.

Donruss cut this bat up in the early 2000s. There are not many bats being processed by the companies at this point as the modern hobby simply has moved on.

Not true about the Declaration. There are a few known examples, but none the less still a disgrace to destroy history for monetary gain. I do think a wacked up Wagner is a good idea though. That card is over valued anyways and not all that "RARE." Plank should be valued well above Wagner IMO. |

There is a video on youtube somewhere of the "room" where all this cut up stuff is kept. They have the raw items to be cut waiting their doom. they show some jerseys and bats and stuff. (big names like Babe Ruth, etc.) It's like death row only for sports memorabilia. But the guy who worked there and ran the "room" was excited as heck that they were making these 'collectibles' available to the hobby. Last edited by travrosty; 04-05-2012 at 02:09 PM. |

I don't mind stuff from current players or recent players where they can just use something for an inning and hand it to the card company rep.
But chopping old stuff bugs me, and bugs me more all the time. Since Pannini is Italian, I expect to see cards with the bits the crazy guy hacked off the Pieta a few years ago, or maybe chunks of that tower in Pisa. Or some Maradona jersy bits with a bit of world cup ball thrown in? Probably not...... And I've really come to hate the lame idea that it's great because a lot of people who can't afford a jersey or bat can have a chance at a tiny bit of one. THANK YOU AGAIN 99%. ![]() ![]() Steve B |

I really hated that video especially that excited guy chopping up these pieces of history. I really do not mind the modern memorabilia cards all that much. I believe today there is plenty of manufactured memorabilia to meet the supply. In the days of Joe Jackson and Josh Gibson that was not the case.

blame Donruss/Playoff....they are the ones who started this....they wanted to make a spalsh upon their return in 2001...they spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on auction items that tehy fully intended to cut up!
one of the items was a Joe jackson bat they paid around $20,000 for...chopped it up good but too bad they lost their MLB License before they produced that card... |

Is the George Washington hair card pubic or cranial? Seriously, I think these kind of acts are a travesty. If a home is declared an historic site then the owners are precluded from altering it. Why not have a similar classification for historical artifacts. Once declared such they cannot be distroyed. Write your congressman!

I don't understand why they don't chop up a wagner, or a 52 mantle, its the same principle. they are not chopping up superman #1, or spiderman #1, are they?
Why take a Wilt Chamberlain Philadelphia Warriors jersey, an incredible piece, and chop it up and totally destroy it? It doesn't make any sense. Let's raid the Smithsonian and cut up Lincoln's stovepipe hat so people can have a piece of it on a card. It's short term, profit driven, greedy thinking. Destroying our sports heritage and history for a quick buck. A multi-billionaire could buy up every single important sports artifact, vintage card, at every auction house in the nation for a decade, and take all that stuff, put it into a big bonfire and burn it, because it is his to do with what he wants. But who would support that? Just because he can, it doesn't make it right. Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park had a good line. "Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should" Last edited by travrosty; 04-07-2012 at 10:57 AM. |

Maybe someone will extract some usable DNA in a few decades and test whether or not it's George Washington's' hair. They can make a clone and see what grows....my guess is that it wouldn't be our first President.

Lets hope it was just a nose hair.
Seriously, how far would the value of the Washington card fall it was revealed it came from his foot or back. Somehow the card would lose it's romantic luster. Though keep in mind that keeping lockets of hair (head hair to be specific) as memento or rememberance was a centuries old practice. Pre-dated Washington. Though if your card turns out to be pubic hair, I'm sure Cesar Palace would pay a pretty penny to display it next to their half eaten cheese sandwich that looks like Charlize Theron. Just think. You could actually over-pay for a pack of cards with a 1:954876 chance of getting a card with one square inch of Jay-Z's real, live concert-worn pants. Jay-Z's pants! Now, there is history.

I just wanted to agree with everyone here, especially about the Josh Gibson bat. Derek made an excellent point. There is no reason why Topps couldn't have simply made it a "golden ticket"-like insert that could be redeemed for the entire Gibson bat. Destroying the bat to chop it into pieces is one thing when you're talking about Jeter or Cal Ripken, where more bats are available, but to do it to one of the only, possibly the only, Gibson bat, was a step too far.

Years ago Upper Deck did have either inserts or a contest for entire bats/jerseys. Problem was the people who ended up with them needed to sell them to afford the tax bill.

He DOES say yogi bear, i didn't catch that before, I didn't know yogi (the bear that is) wore pants. He says it right after he shows us the incredible game worn Jim Brown football jersey they are going to desecrate.
Coming soon, cut up pieces of his picinic basket and cut up pieces of Boo Boo's hide with his nose commanding a premium. The guy at the end says that he has the coolest job imaginable. It would be so depressing. I still can't believe they do this. Last edited by travrosty; 04-08-2012 at 06:47 PM. |

One thing is insert collectors don't like redemption cards, as it can be pain to receive the winning item. I recall modern collectors it might take over a year to get the UD autograph card they won and they sometimes received a substitute card as UD ran out the card the won. Some sometimes felt the substitute was a lesser not equivalent card.
Score used to have redemption insert cards for items like signed baseballs and bats, but that sometimes turned out to be a mess as Score had financial troubles and didn't always supply what was won. In short, collectors tend to like the won item to be in the pack. I know they also don't like sticker autographs-- where the player signs a clear sticker that is placed on the insert card. Instead of signing directly on the card. Collectors unflatteringly call them 'band aid autographs.' Last edited by drc; 04-08-2012 at 08:58 PM. |
