This is too funny, two days in a row getting pictures of facsimile baseballs and the sellers swear that they got the ball signed.
This one said he was the batboy in spring training in 1961, of course 1961. I explained to him, you may have gotten a ball signed but not this one. He writes me back "You are wrong but thats ok." The ball even had the same sweet spot sigs as the ball from yesterday but obviously this one is in much worse condition.

There are few people who collect them. But they can go for $100+ in some instance, I think.

Even if this was a real signed ball, which it isn't, Bobby Shantz wasn't on the team by spring training of 61. Best it could be is 60...hmmmmm

I got an e-mail the other day from a guy trying to sell a Foxx single signed baseball. He says he played a little college ball in Miami under the Beast himself. He sent a scan of his baseball but I'm a little on the fence.

That story sounds very familiar. Had you posted about it before, or was that someone else?

I could be wrong, but didn't it have something to do with Halper, and a sheet of paper signed by 500 HR club members?

I think you're right. I guess my memory is okay, but not precise
![]() Anyway, posting pics of the ball in question would go much farther toward validating the guy's story than a blind "sounds plausible" affirmation. |

Yeah i think the story was that Halper played college ball with Foxx as his coach but no one could remember Halper being on the team. |

In the small world department, I went to school with a fellow (Alan Face) who had in fact been a batboy for the Yankees during '61 spring training and had a newspaper clipping recounting his story. He said the Yanks asked whether he was related to "that rat Elroy."
