I'm flabbergasted. Government paper restores? An unemployed anthropology professor? I'm speechless.

An E95 with a Piedmont back, now that is rare!
What a find! Maybe we can have a thread about when and why this was dropped from the T206 production cycle.

What is more interesting than this early attempt at a scam is the mention that 15-20 T206 Wagners were known to exist. Can anyone read the date on that article?

The article is dated January 1976.

This caused quite a furor in the hobby back in the day, largely because the retired anthropology professor, Dick Reuss, was one of the early collecting scholars. writing articles and compiling checklists not previously available. Most of us presumed he'd know the difference between a T206 and an E card grafted onto a cigarette card back.

Anyone else notice the purchasing group included a 3rd partner from Cincinnati?

I'm pretty sure REA had a blog about this card around a year ago. As a previous poster stated, it's an E95 pastes on a Piedmont back.
If I remember correctly, it appeared at a card show in the Philly area in the early 80's? Tony |

Here is the REA Blog post about E95 caramel card of Wagner in a batting pose that had a “T206 back”:

Thank you Tony and Rob! That is great stuff! So according to Charlie Bray, at some point in the mid 1950's, somebody was trying to perhaps sell a doctored E95 Wagner. All in the name of $50 T206 Wagner dollars. Fast forward to 1976, and the same card seems to surface again. Three advanced collectors plus two government paper restores couldn't determine that the card had been re-backed. The three collectors start dreaming of dollar signs and actually believe the card to be a new T206 Wagner batting pose.
The 1976 baseball card world is skeptical. Especially since T206 Wagner's are now worth $1500. Alas, a cup of cold water squash's the mens glory. Fast forward to circa year 2000. Two Cincinnati men find a T206 Wagner reprint which perhaps has been re-backed (although that is pure speculation on my part). Well now, how ironic that not much has really changed in the hobby once money started getting involved. Oh, did somebody mentioned Charlie Bray? I found this small article about Connie Mack and Charlie Bray delightful. It sure would have been neat to pick Connie Mack's brain about every single one of those cards in Bray's album. Oh (and double Oh), somebody has a neat lower grade rounded corners E95 Honus Wagner in their collection, which has a fascinating story to it and is now part of the hobby's young history. Lovely Day... Last edited by iggyman; 01-25-2012 at 09:01 AM. |

This thread brought up an interesting thought:
Let's suppose that there actually was a second "batting" pose of Wagner issued in the T-206 set, along with his portrait pose. Honus then decides to have both cards withdrawn from the set. Let's just say that there would be the same number of batting poses, versus portrait poses - less than 100 know to exist of each. Do you think the batting pose would command a high price like his portrait T206? I would say no, but I am curious to see what other board members have to say. Tony |
