9/24/1921 - Seething with rage over ball-strike and baserunning calls he felt had gone against him unfairly, Detroit player-manager Ty Cobb challenges umpire Billy Evans to a fistfight and the two go at it for over a half an hour under the stands at Griffith Stadium in Washington.
Players from both clubs, along with a few fans and stadium workers, watch a no-holds-barred, bare-knuckle brawl with no rules, no referee and little decorum observed by Cobb, who fights like a wild man. It's finally broken up when Cobb smashes Evans' head into the cement floor, threatening to kill him. Evans never files a report, but AL president Ban Johnson suspends Cobb as a player for the balance of the year. |

I don't have a Cobb to show, but just wanted to say that I had never heard that story about Ty. I can't imagine what would happen to a player or manager doing something like that today! "Banned for life" comes to mind. Those were certainly different times.

Absoutely great-looking pose (x 2!). Super tough, too. And that one's a beauty. Awesome! Wow. Last edited by Rob D.; 09-25-2009 at 07:53 PM. |

These aren't in the same universe as that American League Publishing Co. (I mean, come on, who wouldn't want to own that card?), but I don't think they've been posted yet:

I have shown most of my Cobb's, but here is one. By the way Ty was not mean all the time, he gave to many charities and hospitals, but he did like to fight.

I just noticed that the picture used in the 1910 PC 796 and 1922 E121 is the same. Pretty long gap for two cards.

Jeff, it's also the same image used on the 1914-15 Crackerjack pose. Being a CJ collector this is what appealed to me most about this PC.
