Browsing through Ebay and everywhere else, I notice that Dierk Nowitskys RC is suddenly relevant again after a series sweep of the Lakers.
Realizing that many prewar cards are often some 100 years older, I was wondering if anyone has stories of similar price bumps based on world events. Did Gehrig cards go crazy when Cal broke his record? Did Babe cards get a boost when the steriod era created a home run frenzy? I'm just curious as to what some of the bigger events/price correlations were. |

Dimaggio rookie (well, at least his '38 Goudey) spiked up when he passed away. I am sure there are other things that make our cards spike too.

Movies will do it. When Cinderella Man came out Jim Braddock stuff got hot and The Fighter pushed Mickey Ward autographs way up.

always see price bumps when someone passes away or when a player gets named to the Hall of Fame.

The common occurance is a price increase for the autograph of any player that passes away. SCD did some type of article on it long ago, and said it was kind of morbid, but it was a fact.

Aaron's Topps rookie, at least in PSA/SGC 7 or better really took flight upwards, while Barry Bonds' '86 Topps Tiffany in graded gem mint really dove down for the old dirt nap when the truth came out for all to see (which is fine by me--although I have both cards in those grades, I always rooted against Bonds. I'd picked up the Tiffany in the mid-nineties, when he wasn't such a jerk!).
Best to all, Larry |
