Tape Residue - Removable?

Hi Guys,

I picked up a lot of cards recently some of which were taped into an album at one point. The cards are Topps from the mid-late 1950's and have yellow tape residue on the borders. Is there any effective way to remove the residue? Thanks in advance for any input.

Does it appear to be a gum-based residue?

My best shot would be Bestine. It removes tape and stickers find. I have a feeling once it has yellowed, it is pretty well changed the makeup of the paper and you will be just as well to either learn to love it or invest in a real restoration expert and all that entails (cost, ethical considerations).

you might find some helpful info on some of the paper/document restoration sites on the web. I don't have any links , but I know there are sites that go into great detail about what chemicals remove what types of substances from paper based on age and condition , etc. I remember starting to read someones pages about ink removal from vintage paper and it got really in depth , like a chemistry lecture almost.

That Walsh portrait looks good even with tape on it, IMO.

I'm not certain if it's gum-based, just looks like scotch tape residue...

I'll definately stay away from any professional restoration, I'd prefer not to see the residue, but it's not that bothersome to justify. Thanks for the tip on the paper restoratoin sites, I'll give them and possibly the Bestine a try. After all, what's life without taking a chance now and again?

i have immersed Topps cards in bestine without ill effect. It doesn't always help, but I have not had it hurt.
