On site grading at the National

I have never participated in on site grading. Could someone enlighten me?

I have a hand full of items (around 4-5) I would like to get graded/crossed over by SGC. Should I consider doing this in person at the National? Should I expect long lines? I only plan on attending the show for 1 day, would this give me enough time to get this accomplished? I am not a very patient person...would a trip to the post office and filling out the correct forms be easier than fighting the crowds in Chicago?

I have never gotten a card graded (by mail or otherwise) so any advice would be appreciated. What have your on site grading experiences been like?

In my experience.... It is a pretty painless process.

You go to the SGC booth and submit your cards (not usually a long wait if any).
They tell you to come back at a certain time (for instance 2 hours later).

Walk around the show... head back when they say it will be ready.... and pick up your cards.


I guess there could be a line either at drop off or pickup...
but it is not like the people on line are submitting and waiting for grades instantly.... its all drop offs and pickups.



I haven't tried onsight grading from PSA so I would have no idea how painful/painless that process is.

It is probably best to call SGC at (800) SGC-9212 or PSA at (800) 325-1121 and get accurate informaton.

My experience, at least at the Cleveland show, was that SGC was taking an inordinate amount of time due to the demand. In fact I almost didn't get my submissions in time for when I had to leave.

I suggest that if you're going to be at the show one day get it in early and pray.

If you're going to come back the next day anyway it shouldn't be a problem.

SGC will be in great demand not only for cards brought to the show but also for your show acquisitions.

My experience in Cleveland last year mirrored Steve's. On Friday night I entered the show earlier than the public, walked immediately over to SGC's booth and handed them 20 cards. I think I literally was their second customer after the show opened. I ended up waiting a half-hour after the show officially ended that night to get them back. So if you want to leave with your cards in hand, I'd suggest submitting them early in the day.

SGC does seem to get really busy grading at the National. Expect your order to be at the tail end of what they say.....I am not knocking them but I have been this route many times.....I usually tell them when I am leaving and we plan on me getting my cards right about 10 minutes before that.....Quality takes time.....

SGC is my grading company of choice but this was my experience in Cleveland:

1) Took a PSA 3 E93 Lajoie to SGC to have it correctly graded (it was an E98 red Lajoie). I joked with the guy from SGC about PSA calling it an E93. Thre hours later the card came back slabbed as an E93 Lajoie 40. I told them of the error and very late in the day I finally got it corrected as an E98 Lajoie 40.
2) Took a beautiful T207 Moriarty with red Cycle back in to be graded along with 10 other cards. Because of the large number of cards being submitted, I was told they would take them, grade them and slab them and mail them to me. A month and a half later I got 10 slabbed cards in the mail back but no T207. Damn shame. SGC paid me for the value of the card but I haven't seen one that nice since (or one at all).

Those were my two experiences. Caveat emptor.

Regular sized cards I think were about $30.

Don't know about oversize or custom slabs.

I do seem to have my share of grading problems I remember that guy in the Lil' Abner comic strip who had a perpetual black cloud hanging over his head, Joe Blftspk or something like that. You older collectors (over 50) will probably remember him. Ok, Adam, deal, I'll let you turn them in for grading in Cleveland!

as far as fees are concerned, PSA is charging the same fees they have on listed on their submission forms with one exception, the lowest fee will be $35 up to $250.....the fees are based on value...SGC told me they would charge $35-$100 (with $100 being the top fee, less than PSA on the very valuable cards)..I believe the higher SGC fees also allow you to get the cards back faster..I am not certain PSA is following this line of thinking...SGC said they will start grading on Tuesday July 29 after they get set up...PSA did not indicate this, more likely a Wednesday start...in the grading business the early birds definitely catch the "worms"...good luck to all..the national is always "interesting", with grading experinces being no exception

I have a bunch of cards with misidentification on the flips. These are cards I bought in the secondary market - I did not send them in myself. Anyone know if PSA and/or SGC will fix these for free, or is there a charge?
