Hey Marc,
"Slow" Joe Doyle is a T206 oddball--and for reasons beyond "N.Y. Nat'l." We know from his appearance with the "apple" green rather than the "forest" green Sovereign 350 back that he was meant as a 350/460 regular print subject, but never made it to print in the 460 series. In this regard, he is like Kleinow (N.Y. Catching), Nichols, Rhoades (Right Arm Extended) and Smith (Chicago White Cap). By my calculation, each of these five subjects was shortprinted by about 1/3 relative to typical 350/460 regular print subjects, although "Slow" Joe exists in even lesser quantities due to the "N.Y. Nat'l" hoarding and alteration scandal. The bottom line is that "Slow" Joe shares a 350 series back profile with 350/460 regular print subjects, which means that in addition to the backs you list he is THEORETICALLY possible with American Beauty 350 No Frame, Drum, Lenox and Uzit. However, I don't think he has been confirmed with any of these other four backs. So your list is complete as a "working" list. EDITED TO ADD: A final note is that since Lenox and Uzit were so late in the T206 production process, they can probably be ruled out as realistic back possibilities for "Slow" Joe (who was, after all, removed from production early), leaving only American Beauty 350 No Frame and Drum as backs that have not yet appeared but for which one can hold out a sliver of hope. Scot,
Thanks for chiming in. Your input is always valuable and welcomed. I have never seen a Doyle with a Tolstoi back though I am sure they exist. I am holding out hope for finding one as it the the last Doyle I need for my backs collection of that card. There is no record on VCP of one selling, though I know that does not mean they don't exist. I know VCP is a nice resource but not fully understanding how they populate the sales records, maybe they missed one? |

PSA's pop report lists just a single Joe Doyle with Tolstoi back, graded as a 1. SGC's shows two cards, a 40 and a 50. So your white whale is out there somewhere....
