How do you feel about companies using old designs on new cards

I know Topps has shoved a ton of this "crap" down collectors throats the last decade, Topps-205, Topps-206, Turkey Red, Allen & Ginter, Etc. I've just gotten my dealer info on a new set that Topps is putting out for 2011 and it's Topps Gypsy Queen Baseball.

There's a gallery of images on Topp's facebook page. Do sets like this bring collectors into the Vintage field. I know I became interested in them after building a Topps Turkey Red baseball set.

What are the thoughts of the Vintage Collectors Community on sets like this?

Archives when it first came out was amazing and great...I think if it is something they make an effort to be true to the roots of the set it can be a nice addition...The GQs look like a real yawner to me.

I suppose there is no good reason to dislike the idea of bringing back older designs. I just simply don't like it. I also realize they have probably run out of ideas on how to design the new cards without some type of duplication. I'd rather they duplicate some of the cooler-looking cards from the 1970's instead of messing with the pre-war vintage. I always thought 1971 and 1972 was a pretty good design for a card.

The only thing I don't like about it is it really screws up the ebay searches on the vintage items of the same name.

I think I'm somewhere in the middle on this. I don't collect any of the new stuff, and none of it has been able to draw me into collecting it. I am fond of the A&G and Turkey Red issues; not so much a fan of the T205 and T206 issues though.

I do like some of the designs they've came up with for modern cards, using the "old designs". I think it could get modern type card collectors to acquire an interest in pre-war cards too.........but, of course, there's nothing like the real thing They've also been including more players from baseballs' past in their recent sets (or so it seems to me, at least).

I like it. My 11 year old son at least has an idea now that cards were produced before 1999 and takes some interest in the pre-war stuff. Most of the vintage designs look better than the new ones anyway.

i only like the newer ones with vintage designs if the pictures are different from the original cause its like a "What If type question" other then that i dont't care too much about it

Topps has been doing this for 60 years...


1948 and 1955 Hocus Focus, modeled after many "spit" cards of the 1930-40s

1970, 1972, 1973 lids, modeled after Dixie Lids

I'll pick up a modern pack of Topps here and there and I like when I get cards like these in the packs........it's not like getting a new T206 in the mail or anything, but sort of fun in its own way.

In away they are showing tribute to the old styles like ford did with the mustang and chevy with the camaro

After seeing that Gypsy Queen Pujols I wanted to laugh. They should have at least tried to make it look like a Gypsy Queen card by using a more sepia type of image. I did like the 56 Topps style card of Cobb.

Overall, I figure that the attempts to recreate the vintage look isn't too bad. It might actually get collectors interested in the "real" part of the hobby. I shouldn't bash or look down upon modern material collectors. To each their own.

In 2007 Topps did a Turkey Red themed set, It's what got me back into collecting. More so the Red Bordered Parallels.

2009 upper deck Goudey is directly responsible for my turn to prewar. More specifically because my ebay searches for 2009 goudey reveal original pre war Goudey.

I collected the 2009 UD Goudey Base Set, then 2009 Topps A&G Base set, 2009 A&G mini parallel with various backs and frames.

By the time I finished those, I had picked up a 33 Goudey Travis Jackson and a T205 Merkle just to say I had one. Then I caught the pre war bug and stopped "wasting my money on modern crap"

I think this was a great idea but don't understand why they left the hole in the plastic over the auto. They changed it the next year .

I don't like it. I feel like the card companies are getting more like Hollywood. Out of new ideas so all the majority of new productions are remakes. Yuck.

I think its fantastic.

First of all, Topps continues to make their regular, standard "new" sets each year (the 2010 Topps set, which my 10-year-old collects, is one of the most beautiful card sets ever, IMO).

Second, I think they're doing a great job showing reverence and respect for the history of the hobby, as well as the history of the game. They have absolutely gotten my son interested in vintage cards, and vintage baseball in general. And I just think a lot of them look really COOL. The A&G cards are fantastic.

They also made some really, really cool "B-18 Blankets" that looked virtually identical to the originals - one of these days I'm going to build a set of them.

Absolutely! I can scarcely search for T206 cards without getting the new "Topps T206" crap.

They are free to make what they please and maybe someone likes them but I am not impressed in the least.

As for companies producing vintage themed sets, I'm all for it. Without the 2006 Topps Allen & Ginter set, I'm not sure I would be collecting what I am today (T206.) The A&G set, along with other vintage themed issues, boosted my interest in the 19th century and Deadball era card sets.

I like the retro sets. My only complaint is that Topps spells out all of the numbers on the Allen and Ginter sets ("two thousand and ten" instead of "2010"). Even in the 1880s, they used numerals instead of spelling them out in words.

I am a bit neutral on it. I would say that anything which gets collectors into checking out the real vintage cards is good for our hobby. It's always fun to have more collectors to collect with. I have no interest in collecting any new players though. (as mentioned before) regards

I like them. If they could put to use some of the old unused images that the Topps Vault sells now (color negatives) onto some of the classic card designs instead of new players, I'd like it even more. Maybe they have and I just haven't seen any. I don't buy very much of the new products anymore.

I don't really understand why they reprint the same exact card. They have done this in some of the newer football sets (ie. 1957 Topps and newer) over the last 8 years or so. Why would I want a 2001 Topps recreation of a 1972 Topps Roger Staubach RC and all its parallels...chrome ect.??
