Default June 2010 Pick-ups

Arrived at work today and on the desk in my office was a package waiting for me. I have been waiting (impatiently) for about 15 years to add this Clemente item to my collection. I first saw one at the Ft. Washington show in about 1995 and passed on it at the time. I have regretted it ever since, have attempted to win some that have been on e-bay in the last year or so but came up short. This last time I saw one, I took the plunge. A couple of other HOF'ers came along for the ride....

Default 1968 Plaks

Congratulations on this tough item. Thanks to the Mile High find I was able to finish the set last year ( assuming and hoping Larry is right about the revised checklist). Also have an unopened pack and the checklists. Too bad the darn things are so unattractive and look so little like the players they represent.

Topps sure went wild in 1967 and 1968 on the test issues. There are a few tough Clemente's from those years--67 and 68 Disc, the Plak, the 68 3D, and the two pose variations of the 67 Punch Outs

Are you a Clemente collector ?

Hi Al,

Yes, the Mile High find was good in a lot of ways. I read that the seller didn't want any #'s released pertaining to how many were in the find (not sure why). I think Drent stated he could have placed all the Plaks from the find in the pockets of his coat.

I am a Clemente collector, but had put his items on the backburner as I chased after pre-war items, but I had to pull the trigger on this one. Are you aware of the Clemente variation on the 68 Plaks?

I have seen the 1967 Topps Disc of Clemente, but the seller was asking $10,000. Not sure if he still has it. I missed a Clemente punch-out on e-bay probably 8 years ago that sold for $100-150 (still kicking myself).

And one of these days I'll go for the 1968 3D.

Mike

Default Clemente

I was not aware of a Plak variation other than the Mantle. What is the difference for Clemente ? I have the 67 Discs ( Giants and Regular) done but not the 68s ( I have only managed 3 of those and no Clemente). I have the 67 Punch Outs and the 3Ds done, except for the recent proof cards.

Dave,

I'll try to get a post up showing the difference tomorrow. I have to find where I have the images saved.

On the Mantle it is the nose. One is referred to as the "big nose Mantle" and the other a "normal nose". I think Bob (Bob's Mantle too) has a big nose. Very tragic

Default O.K. Blue Jays let's play ball!

Started a 1977 Topps Blue Jays team set and my first 9 cards were delivered today. What a motley bunch! One of the worst teams ever! My best cards so far are Alan Ashby and the guy Boston would later trade Jeff Bagwell for... Larry Anderson! I have 5 more cards on the way including 3 cards forum member Rob Miller won on my behalf! Check out the link for a bad collection of moustaches, hair and afros!

Default Jeff, I didn't realize...

you are building a PSA 9 set...that really dresses things up a bit!

These cards are readily available so I thought a PSA 9 set would provide more of a challenge. Also, the Andre Dawson RC will really 'dress' this set up when I get one. Thanks for the comments Jason!

As a life long Jays fan I wanted to chime in and just say that that's a nice looking (sub)set you've got going.

Good luck tracking down that John Scott rookie

Richard
