I'm interested in early Boston teams of the 1870s and would like to create a photo checklist of Mort Rogers scorecards that picture Boston players on the cover.
According to Barry Sloate's article "Mort Rogers and His Famous Photographic Scorecards" in issue #5 of VCBC magazine , there are 11 known "Mort Rogers" scorecards that picture Boston players. Schafer was posted previously on net54. McVey and Birdsall were sold at auction. Harry Wright's scorecard is pictured in black & white in the VCBC article. That leaves 7 Mort Rogers scorecards that I cannot locate. If you can post an image of any of the remaining Boston player scorecards I would appreciate it. Thanks! Paul C. Roscoe C Barnes Frank L Barrows X David S Birdsall J Fred Cone Charles H Gould Samuel Jackson X Calvin A McVey X Harry C Schafer Albert W Spalding George Wright X (b/w) Harry Wright |

I think Lelands auctioned a large group of them back in the 90's that included both Wright brothers.
I'll have to check the catalogs.

Yes, a near set of 10 was found but included only the scorecard fronts. The players were: both Wrights, Spalding, Barnes, McVey, Shaefer, Jackson, Birdsdall, Cone, and Gould.

The article states that the lot appeared in Leland's auction of August 4th 1992. Anybody have this catalog?

Jimmy- I used to own that Birdsall. I remember it because of the misaligned name.

Barry, wonder if this was an earlier scorecard since it carried a 5 cents price tag instead of 10 cents.
The 'No.' caption above left wasn't printed like the others.

Jimmy- I've surmised that the 1871 sold for 5 cents, and because of its popularity, the price was raised to 10 cents in 1872. But it's just an educated guess.

According to the prices realized list provided by Rob, this Lot of 10 Mort Rogers scorecards sold for $28,600 in 1992.
I think I identified 8 of the 10 players in the auction catalog photo, but the last two I'm not so sure about. By process of elimination the two unidentified players should be Fred Cone and Sam Jackson, but I don't recognize the player 2nd from left on the top as being either player. It’s possible he could be Frank Barrows or a different player. Barry Sloate states in his VCBC article: “Some (Mort Rogers scorecards) have appeared with names and pictures that do not match.” Top row: Dave Birdsall; ?; Cal McVey; Harry Schafer; Harry Wright Bottom row: ?; Charlie Gould; George Wright; Ross Barnes; Al Spalding Can anyone positively identify the remaining two players? Are they Cone or Jackson, or maybe Barrows or some other player. The card in the bottom row on the left is covered up and may not be identifiable. |

Fred Cone second in the top row and Sam Jackson first in the second row. These scorecards were auctioned a second time in an REA auction in 2000, I believe.
Hi Barry. I'm currently cooling my heels in Erwin, TN, 340 miles into my journey. |

Thanks for the info Gary.
Does anyone have the REA catalog for 2000? Maybe the images in the REA catalog are better than the ones from the 1992 Leland catalog. |

The scorecard photo 2nd from left on the top row (below far right) is definitely (I think - it is a bit blurry) not the same guy in these 2 photos (below left) identified as Cone (correctly?). What is strange is that he does resemble Cone as depicted in a team woodcut - below 3rd from left - in fact it appears the woodcut was made from that scorecard photo.

Hi Gary- hope you are doing well. For those who don't know, Gary is in the process of hiking the entire Appalachian Trail, about 2200 miles! I guess he took a break to catch up on Net54.
