Carl Horner Photo

I need some education on Carl Horner photography. I recently aquired the piece in the attached image. I was told it was a second generation photograph no later than 1913. I was told it was purchased from Hunt auctions about 10 years ago. Can anyone help me figure out if this piece is authentic from the photographs? Any help is greatly appreciated.

As soon as I saw your image, before I read your text, I said that looks like a second generation photograph. You do see them occasionally in connection with Horner American League composites. As far as the date of 1913, I've never heard that cited before and would want to know how someone came up with it.

To answer your question is it a genuine second generation photo, I would have to see it in person to make that determination. But if it came from a Hunt Auction and was identified as such, I would feel very confident it is correct.

Thanks for the response. I am still researching to see if it was sold at Hunt. The seller told me it was no later than 1913. I am not too familiar with photography, what exactly does second generation mean?

Yes, Leon's is first generation. I'm sure he will chime in when he reads this.

Second generation photos are ones printed at a date later than the original one, using the same negative. You can also have a photo of a photo, but I don't think that is the case here. I do not know how anyone can definitively date it 1913. Hopefully David Rudd can come on an elaborate on this, as I may have my facts a little mixed up.

Would something like this have any value or would collectors not bother because it is a second gen? I would assume second gens are more readily available but not sure to what extent.

It definitely has a lot of value, but it would be some percentage of a first generation image.

Worth adding: A first-generation example sold with Hunt's a couple of auctions earlier for $21,000 versus $2,000 for the second-generation example. Barry is right on !!!

I have been busy and haven't been over to our memorabilia side today. I guess I am the owner of the original one from Hunts. I just wish I got it for what it sold for back then. ....It is my only photograph and is the only thing on my office wall(s). It is from the Nixie Callahan collection, from what Hunt said...though the letter of provenance had been lost before I obtained the photo. I have never heard the reprints were from back in the teens but I think I did hear they were old. I am not a photo expert by any means but the nice reprints I have seen (I think REA sold one in the last few years or so) sold in the $1500 range...at least I think that is what the last one sold for publicly. Even though it's not a "card", it's probably my favorite piece in my collection.
