Can someone tell me a little about these? I assume the cards are authentic. Can they be cut from the Topps holder, or are they permanently sealed?

They are easily cut/removed from the Topps' holders. Why some collectors pay a premium for these is a mystery to me.
edited to add: They are authentic, but I did notice one for sale on Ebay last year that had a reprint inside. I assume some enterprising little thief made the switch after acquiring the card from Topps, but I have no way of knowing. Last edited by Anthony S.; 08-04-2009 at 07:35 PM. |

I once had a Topps t206 buyback that had two cards inside. an Oldring (bat) was on top and I couldn't discern who the other player was. Eventually, the curiosity won out, I cut it open to find another Oldring (bat). I had talked myself into thinking it was a Cobb.

I think the T-cards display nicely in those Topps "slabs". I'm constantly amazed by the premium people pay for them though. Seems ridiculous. |

I've bid on a few of these, but not won one... They do look somewhat neat.
I remain annoyed at the name 'buy back'. Topps can't buy them back, Topps didn't sell them in the first place!! It reminds me of the term 'hot water heater'; hot water doesn't need heating, those things are 'water heaters', not 'hot water heaters'. |

I have a Lena Blackburne. There was a time I was collecting Blackburne cards as I'm fascinated by his contribution to the game, which has lasted forever, and so I picked one up.
It's really a pretty cool card, and while I agree with Frank's assessment of the term "buyback," I also think it's an outstanding way to get younger collectors interested in vintage cards - so I'll give them a pass for poor grammar. ![]() -Al |

I have bought several of these over the years and the prices can be all over the board. All of them I cut out quite easily.
The condition can be spotty, but there are some gems out there. I bought a Ed Karger in one of those holders for $30. Not a bad deal. I have also heard of examples of trimmed cards being found, though I have never come across one.

From what I understand, Topps bought the majority of these cards from Kit Young. I loved the series, and it's being re-introduced this year. The prospect of pulling a tobacco card from a modern pack is quite enticing.

The one that bothers me is "with au jus" or "served in an au jus sauce". Pardon your French, but this translates into "with with juice".

I once encountered a menu at a small town restaurant, and it listed desserts, including apple pie a la mode, and apple pie a la mode with ice cream.

In the months following Magic Johnson's announcement in November 1991, if I had collected a dollar every time I read in a newspaper or heard on a TV newscast "HIV virus," I'd have a 1933 Goudey Lajoie right now.
