Overall thoughts or opinions on Exhibits??

I recognize they are less popular than some others, however, this also makes it easier monetarily to collect a host of stars from days gone by. I guess it boils down to one's own collecting style and goals. Any thoughts?

Good choice, reasonably priced, very possible to complete sets of each year on a budget as long as you are willing to accept lower-grade condition.

I'm a big fan of Exhibits. I collect everything from the 20s to the 60s. I even collect the diced up singles from the 4-in-1s, which some guy on ebay has the nerve to call a separate issue (at $200 a pop!). It's tough to find bargains from the 20s and 30s, but the cards from the 40s to the 60s are still very cheap. Here are a few of my favorites ...

Affordable, and great looking photos.

They look great displayed on a shelf on a wall, or in a small picture frame.

Exhibits are just as everyone has said....mostly affordable and with great pictures. There are some hobbyists who have really focused on these throughout the years. If I can ever find out what this "Exhibit" is I will be happier....This is what makes collecting fun for me....always something new to be found.....best regards

In agreement with everyone else, affordable cards with great photos. I have been collecting them for years and can't get enough of them.

Great fun to collect, but harder than many to complete. My Johnny Rizzo appears to have lived in a dumpster most of its life. And Gabby Hartnett, well, I've never sen a really good one. On the other hand the Foxx card is consistently valued at $100 in EX or better, and they're quite easy to find. Reprints are a problem, but since most of mine came from the Kennywood Park Penny Arcade in Pittsburgh in about 1952, I worry less.

I don't make a point to collect them but I do enjoy them. How else could I have purchased a Dimaggio for $20 and not felt like I robbed someone?

Like the 1934 Batter-Ups, I also love Exhibits for their crazy color variations.....they literally almost hurt the eyes.

I like the exhibits too. But the prices people have been asking lately for graded ones are astronomical. I think the grading companies wouldn't touch these for many years, so not that many have been graded. And I've seen many listings for "highest graded" examples -- in grades like "4" -- with asking prices that are simply a fortune. Some even sell, I guess to collectors who are trying to improve their registry street cred. But it's really threatening to make these very affordable cards into unaffordable ones. I've seen graded Exhibits in the 3-5 range sell for ten times what they sell for in the same condition ungraded, in the same month.

Wow, some beautiful exhibits shown in this thread. I really am jealous of the Ted Williams that smtjoy posted, I'd love to have that card in that grade.

I agree with all the other post, it is a very attractive set that I feel is very undervalued. You can get many HOF'ers for under $100 if your not too picky about condition. And the photography is fantastic too, each is like it's own little piece of artwork. Why this set is so overlooked I don't understand, but that's ok with me, makes it more affordable to the average Joe collector.

Great cards, pre-1939.

After learning that many of the 1939-46's were actually printed through the fifties, I had to dump those and focus just on the earlier Exhibits.

The Salutations were not printed through the 1950s, but certain cards were printed for as long as those players were playing, most notoriously Ted Williams, whose card has been confirmed into 1961. The cards of players who were gone by WWII are extremely short-printed and are very, very hotly contested when they come up for auction. Of course, I've long been an advocate of scrapping the distinctions between the "Salutations" and the other postwar cards and treating it all as one big issue with distinct series and levels of difficulty.

Oh, and for anyone thinking of branching into Exhibit collecting, don't do it. Stay with other cards. The 11th Commandment is "Thou shalt not collect what Adam is collecting until he is done with his sets."
