For sale is a rare 1951 San Diego Padres Team Issue of "Happy" Sam "Toothpick" Jones. Jones had a rather interesting career in the majors including being the first African American pitcher to throw a no-hitter in the major leagues. Here is the story, taken from SABR's bio website, behind the photo: On August 18, 1951, the Padres staged Happy Sam Night to try to change their pitcher's luck after a losing streak. It helped that night and more -- the Indians called Sam up in September. He made his debut on September 22 in relief at Detroit, getting the last two outs in the eighth inning as the Indians lost, 9-4. His first major-league start came on the last day of the season against Detroit. Sam lost a tough 2-1 duel, as he walked the bases loaded in the seventh. The last pass was intentional, but opposing pitcher Virgil Trucks foiled the strategy by looping a two-run single to left. Great photo that shows Sam in his San Diego uniform, a floral good luck charm and his famous toothpick. Decent condition (not perfect but presentable). **$20 shipped** ![]() Last edited by Wite3; 06-29-2009 at 04:30 PM. |

Just to clear this up a bit...it is a team issued photo. The Padres gave away packs of team photos like many other teams in the '50s and '60s and this is one that was included. It is rare (never seen another) and it is uncatalogued (as far as I know).
