My new hobby - Boxing cards

I picked up a couple boxing cards of John Sullivan recently. I now own 2 and I'm pretty excited about it. I am wondering if anyone can shed some light as to who would be the Cobb or Wagner of boxing during the late 1800's or early 1900's? Would Sullivan be at the top of most people's list as one of the greats? What issues are the most scarce and sought after? What would you buy if you were looking for oddball or rarities in boxing cards? Thank you in advance for your knowledge, Dan

Welcome to the world of boxing cards. I made the switch from Baseball to Boxing over the past year and a half. I can't say that I'm excited about the competition, and in Chicago no less!

Sullivan is the most popular of the 19th Century boxers. Jack Johnson is easily the most popular of the Early 20th Century boxers. If I had to compare anyone's popularity to Cobb, it would definitely be Jack Johnson.

By the way, which Sullivan's did you pick up? I just picked up the Mayo Sullivan on Ebay last night.

Dan,

John L. Sullivan, James Corbett, Jack Johnson, Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Jack Dempsey are all the big fighters that everyone collects. Then there are so many fighters in the middle that have great history. Boxing History is very rich in names just like baseball.

The original 'jack dempsey' - Nonpareil.
The man with awfully hard bare fists, Bob Fitzsimmons.
Maybe the best ever, Peter Jackson - could fight and beat anybody, if given the chance.
There's Sam Langford.
Willie Pep.
And of course, Cassius Clay.

Many 'Greats'.
Many many great cards.

If you want to pursue a single player collection he would be the most comprehensive since he has a wide variety of domestic and foreign issues from the 1920s up. There are dozens of Exhibit cards, for example.
