To me, baseball prior to 1887 was totally different than that during and after 1887, because before that date, the batter could specify how the pitch should be served to him: a high or low pitch.

The same applies to 1881, because in that year the pitcher's mound was moved back from 45' to 50'. I believe that it wasn't until 1893 that the pitcher pitched from the current 60'6".
