I understand that he is an industry veteran and likely is extremely knowledgeable, but I personally do not see the value in the additional layer of certification/authentication. That said, I understand why newer collectors (or perhaps more specifically, investors) would want the additional certification.
It seems to be something of service to help those who practice “buy the card, not the TPG grade,” which is my approach, but I feel like anyone who’s been collecting for a long time can see the nuances within cards of the same grade.
For example, on his own website, he even calls out that different cards of the same grade will sell for disparate amounts of money, and notes that there is a range of conditions with a grade.
I think that’s the answer—the market is already determining the differences and establishing a premium on the nicer cards.
