Similar story with my paternal Grandfather. He was more of a comic book guy though. Kept all his stuff in a drawer, went off to Korea, his mother threw them away. He told me his favorite comic she got rid of was the one with Batman's first appearance aka Detective Comics No. 27, which just went for a cool Million.

Safe to say, I wish I had a time machine.
