Default 1952 Topps #145 Joe Haynes

#145 Joe Haynes

Joseph W. "Joe" Haynes. Pitcher for the Washington Senators in 1939-1940 and 1949-1952. 76 wins and 22 saves in 14 MLB seasons. 1948 All Star. 1947 AL ERA leader. Was married to Clark Griffith's daughter. Pitched for the Chicago White Sox in 1941-1948. Spent post-career in the Washington Senators/Minnesota Twins organization, including pitching coach (1953-1955) and eventually executive vice-president.

From his SABR Biography: Pitcher Joe Haynes fell in love with the boss’ daughter at the Washington Senators’ spring training camp in 1938. This didn’t, however, prevent him from being traded two years later to the Chicago White Sox, where he spent eight very productive years. He returned to the Senators in the latter part of his career, until he retired in 1952. His connection with the family did ensure that his playing days were followed by a career in the front office, which ended with his sudden death in 1967 after the team had moved to Minnesota.
