I just saw it and it's rather a bizarre story to say the least.

I don't recall if anyone in the movie came up with a convincing reason why his albums bombed in the U.S. My theory is that he was singing protest and social commentary songs and his albums came out in late 1970 and sometime in 1971 and by then I believe everyone was just had enough of that kind of music - especially after the Kent State incident. It would be like issuing a new disco album about a year after disco demolition night.
