He probably would have done like the Yankees of the 50's and early 60's and used lesser teams as basically farm teams for trades. He could have thrown all kinds of money in with the trades and still have saved tons of money.

Yeah, you're right about this. Also, to be fair the Yankees have always been better at bringing talent up than paying for veteran services.
