I also have some of the Lorillard variations and they are definitely period. I believe that they were either early stage proofs of cards that were never made or cut from an ad piece. They do not appear to be thin paper like one might expect from an ad sheet so I think the proof idea is a better possibility. Why did they come out suddenly--probably they came from one source. When that group is exhausted there will probably be no additional ones. That has been my experience over the years with similar rare material. Finds of rare M101-4/5 backs are prime examples. They were rarely ever seen, appear in a group, and then (other than resales of the original find) are not seen again.
