I have to admit to being in that camp as well, then I got a hold of a CD called "Stripped" where they basically do some songs with minimal accompaniment and managed to find some appreciation...
That said, I'll contribute:
"Eddie Van Halen was NOT a great guitar player."
He certainly mastered the fretboard and played fast but wasn't particularly innovative.
