The roughly 1,000 Russian paratroopers who landed at Hostomel airport lasted less than a day before they were wiped out by reservists and a handful of foreign volunteers. By comparison, at the Battle of Arnhem, 750 British paratroopers held out for nine days against elements of two Waffen-SS Panzer divisions.
