Could be, but then it would have been wonderful if they had tried their hand at the gorgeousness that was the set that inspired them in the first place.
That sort of artwork I could seriously have gotten behind! (Then again, some of those depictions are pretty sad, too. Being released 44 years prior to the '55s allowed them a bit more leeway for cringiness, IMHO.)
These were clearly created by whoever did the little comics on the backs of the Topps cards.
