Default 1966 Yankees team signed - Legit?

I am usually just a bat guy, but I picked up this baseball very reasonably over the weekend. Seller told me it was 1966 Yankees.

There was a letter inside the (original) box; on one side, it had the complete player list (no Mantle); and on the other, it was a letter explaining that the guy used to get team signed balls and send them to Shriner's Hospital, orphanages, and the like. He did it out of his own pocket, apparently just to make kids happy, and invited people to write him back or something.

The ball has 1807 written on it, the box has the same number, and the letter also has the same number.

So, two questions:
1) Are these sigs legit?
2) Has anyone heard of this guy before? I think it says John O'Conner on the letter, but I will have to double check when I get home.

Thanks,
Sean
