2 reasons...
Reason #1: 1975 Topps MVP cards. I was 11 years old and it was the first time I ever got to see what the older Topps sets looked like. The 1956 cards, especially the magnificent Mantle card made a very big impression.
Reason #2: Because there was no Bowman, I find that 1956 & 1957 have the best selection of great players. To me, 1956 was superior because it included Jackie and Bob Feller. If only there was a Stan Musial card.
