During batting practice at the '79 All-Star Game at the Seattle Kingdome, I caught a ball hit into the stands by Steve Garvey. It was an official American League ball, so a few days later I mailed it to my favorite player — Catfish Hunter — to his home in Hertford, N.C., requesting an autograph. Along with the note, I enclosed a US money order for $10 to cover the return postage to Canada. Within in a couple of weeks, I not only received my autographed baseball, but a couple of nicely personalized signed photos — and the uncashed MO, along with a handwritten note from Hunter explaining that he was happy to have fans in Canada.
