I think that Halper legitimately thought his items were authentic. BUT he created a web of stories behind every item to convince everyone else of their authenticity. It's one thing to get scammed, but once it became obvious that was scammed, it was all the proof we needed to know that he was a liar as well. Forrest Gump couldn't come up with the stories that Halper did.
