I have the iPhone app, but I imagine it's very similar to the iPad app.
1) Unfortunately, it seems that only attached images display.
2) I don't have any problems creating new threads or responding to existing threads. Make sure you're logged in, then look in the upper right for a box with an arrow coming out of it.
