Presented is a decidedly rare bush league artifact: a 12-inch softball signed by (21) members of the 1937 Baltimore Orioles. Spared from play, the sphere is minimally affected by small surface abrasions and showcases fountain pen signatures that average (“7-8”) quality. Of the 21 who signed, 17 went on to perform at the big league level. Included are Sweet Spot: Martin (d.1960) and Fischer (d.1963); North Panel: Matuzak (d.1978), Kerr, Roetz, Powers (d.1978) and Wright (d.1995); South Panel: Wilburn, Lohrman (d.1999, signature “6”), Rhodes (d.1960, signature “5”), Schalk (d.1990, signature “6”) and Gray (d.1969, signature “5”); West Panel: Abernathy (d.1961), Puccinelli (d.1956) and Egan (d.1968); East Panel: Vandenberg (d.1994), Kimsey (d.1942), Sivess (d.2003, signature “5-6”), Gumpert (d.2008, signature “4”), Crouse (manager, d.1983) and Cissell (d.1949).
