Since Cap Anson was one of the most well known 19th century baseball players, it would seem he would be well represented on cards of the period. He is, in fact, pictured on most 19th century lithographic or line drawing issues. However, he is not pictured on most photographic issues. Old Judge basically only shows him in street clothes ( his in uniform pose is a composite) and G&B's Anson card is not Anson. The only issue picturing him in uniform, I believe, is Mayo. Why do you think this is? Anson was photographed in uniform many times prior to the proliferation of baseball cards in the late 1880s. Could it have been a matter of compensation for his image and his unwillingness to be photographed without being paid?
As a side point: is there information about compensation for ballplayers whose images were used on cards in the 19th century?
