The 1st card that I remember with a really active RC following was the 1977 Topps Mark Fidrych card. That card was selling at $3 in 1977 and if you see old SCD's -- you can see people bidding and selling that card in that price range. Always struck me as weird that a card could be that expensive coming out of packs.
Then CPU began, and they really pushed the envelope on the Rookie Card mania which hit a peak with the 1981's of Joe Charbonneau; then Tim Raines and Fernando Valenzuela.
