Power erasing is what a poster above described, taking a high grade Topps or Bowman card that does not have frame lines, such as must 50's cards and "centering" the card by power erasing the short border side of the card. Was highly used by some upper mid west dealers back a few years back. Can usually be detected under a loupe as color is still present in the minute depressions of the cardboard surface.

If you ever have doubts just measure the image part of a known good card and compare it with the suspect card, the printed area will always be the same size of legit cards and smaller on power erased versions.
