Since there seems to be some confusion about my connection with SCD, let me clarify.
In May, 2006, I left the employ of F+W Publications, the owner of SCD. For a number of years prior to that, though I was employed at F+W, it was solely in the capacity of editor of the Stadard Catalog of Baseball Cards. To facilitate that role, I maintained an irregular column "SCD Update" in SCD, as well as an even more infrequent column "The Bleacher Bum," which was essentially a blog in the days before there were blogs. The roles of editor and publisher of SCD were held by a succession of other people since the late 1980s.
In Oct., 2009, I contracted with F+W to be a part-time (very part-time) contributor to the SCBC, maintain the vintage sections of the book. I also maintain the title of a consignment director with F+W's auction arm, Collect.com Auctions. To facilitate my role with the SCBC, I authorized SCD editor T.S. O'Connell to pick up any material he wanted from my blog (linked below) and reprint it in SCD.
I have no operating role in SCD, nor in any business aspects of the SCBC or any other F+W property.
Information about problems with SCD advertisers should be directed to current publisher Tom Bartsch at
tom.bartsch@fwmedia.com.
FWIW, I remember the name Carl Meyer quite well. When I was publisher in the 1980s, I threw him out of SCD for crooked operations and co-operated in what I vaguely recall was a successful prosecution of some sort in his home state of Maryland that resulted in a slapped wrist. If he's back under an assumed name, I'm sure the publisher would welcome your information.
