"Harry Herbert was the first African American to play for a professional Bridgeport team. He was born circa 1867 and grew up on State Street in Bridgeport. Herbert started his professional career in 1894 with Pawtucket, and progressive-minded James O'Rourke signed Herbert in 1895 to play with his Bridgeport Victors team. Over the course of his four-year professional career in Bridgeport, Herbert batted a solid .289"
