I had a similar experience with some older football cards I was bidding ononce. they were totally in the wrong category and were listed as old football cards. The seller had a 7 day auction I can remember, and by the 6th day only a handful of people had even looked at the auction according to his counter. I went to bed that night thinking my max bid was probably enough to win due to the condition of the cards ( fair-good), and that they were in the wrong category for cards. Some idiot outbid me and then another idiot outbid that guy. So they ended up paying almost $100 each for 5 cards from the 1935 Chicle set....no hall of famers or high numbers. I actually think I've seen those same cards for sale twice on ebay in the last year. 2 days later I won PSA graded versions of the same cards for around $35-$40 each in PSA 2 and 3.
I haven't found a deal on Ebay in over a year in reality. I just submitted an offer to 707sportscards for some cards that he has listed for 6 times what PSA's SMR has them listed for. If they accept any of my offers I will consider it a deal coming from 707sportscards.
