looks like a stamping die / not a printing plate.
I would guess it was meant to be a generic player, and was stamped on every item in a production run (whether it was a book / card / folder / paper / leather/ who knows /etc.)
If I had to pick a player.... he looks more like DiMaggio than Ruth to me.
