Bob Craik's above description of what a tenured faculty member (professor) is, is accurate. I happen to be one at Oregon State University.

Bruce used the term in a more colloquial than technical sense. For example, you can say:

"During Leon's tenure as moderator of Net54, he had to deal with a lot of hassles."

This is the way I read Bruce's use of the term, and it is a correct usage as well.
